Questions & Answers

Why did you create Workfolio?
I always wanted to create something that could change people's lives in some way. Several years ago I tried to create my own website. Even though I had designed and built dozens of websites for clients, it was a very frustrating process. I realized this is because all of the website builder apps are principally designed for businesses yet the features needed for an individual website are quite different. That was the seminal moment for me... I wondered how many others struggled with the same thing? Later, we surveyed hundreds of people and found out this was a problem many people had experienced. I designed Workfolio to make it easy for anyone to get more visibility for the work they do.
What is your design process?
I like to start by mind-mapping the relationship between components. This helps me understand what emphasis and proximity should be placed on various design elements. A wire frame usually follows. I sketch wireframes using a sharpie instead of a pencil. This helps keep things uncluttered. Before I begin working in pixels I review the elements to determine which are absolutely necessary. I start using graphic design software in black and white and usually with only one type style. This forces me to focus on making sure the design is easily scannable in raw form. After I'm satisfied with the layout, I go about adding color, choosing fonts, and adding other embellishments to create the final design.
